The MTV Video Music Awards are happening tonight, and Heather Heyer‘s mother will be on to present the Best Fight Against the System award.

Ever since Heyer was killed by a white supremacist in Charlottesville, Susan Bro has spoken about how she will uphold her daughter’s mantle by speaking against bigotry and racial hatred. Much of Bro’s effort has gone towards the Heather Heyer Foundation, the organization she recently launched to help proponents of social justice.

Bro confirmed in a statement to PEOPLE that she will speak during tonight’s musical festivities. The Best Fight Against the System award celebrates activism for causes like racial equality, LGBT rights and environmental justice.

Bro said she was skeptical when MTV first reached out to her, but she decided to speak after considering how large an impact her daughter’s death had on the country.
