James Clapper Questions Trump’s ‘Fitness’ for Office: ‘I Just Find this Extremely Disturbing’ (Mediaite)

Shortly after President Donald Trump wrapped up his off-the-rails rally speech in Phoenix Tuesday night, the former Director of National Intelligence straight-up questioned the president’s fitness for office and ability to carry out his duties.

Speaking to CNN anchor Don Lemon, ex-DNI and current CNN commentator James Clapper said that the speech was “objectionable on so many levels.”

He added, “I toiled in one capacity or another for every president since and including John F. Kennedy through President Obama and I don’t know when I’ve listened and watched something like this from a president that I found more disturbing.”

Clapper observed that this really shouldn’t have been a surprise and that what we saw was the “real Trump,” as opposed to the previous night’s “teleprompter Trump.” Still, he noted: “I just find this extremely disturbing.”

“I really question his ability to be, his fitness to be in this office and I also am beginning to wonder about his motivation for it. Maybe he is looking for a way out,” Clapper stated.

When asked by Lemon what should Washington do at this point, Clapper pointed to Sen. Bob Corker’s remarks in which he said Trump hasn’t shown competency or stability, stating that other “thoughtful Republicans” may soon get to that point.
