Ignatius: Trump Has To Be ‘Super-Careful’ of Not ‘Smiling Too Broadly’ Standing Next to Putin at the G-20

‘Trump has to be super careful that the photos of that meeting don’t come away with him kind of smiling too broadly’

EXCERPT:

IGNATIUS: "I think the headline is Trump prepares for a key meeting with Russian President Putin. The name Putin has been toxic in Washington now for months. And there -- there is an investigation underway that makes this very tricky for -- for President Trump. At the same time, there is a desire, strongly supported by our allies in Germany and in France for a better dialogue between the U.S. and Russia. There's a feeling that things have gotten so polarized that -- that there's got to be improvement on that. So -- so I think it’s interesting that Trump is talking today to Germany and France both of which have -- have said they’d like to see improvement in U.S.-Russia relations. I think that when -- when Putin meets -- meets Trump, you’ll see the beginnings of the next steps that the two can take together in Syria to deescalate and stabilize the situation there. Just come from Syria, there are all sorts of opportunities that our military commanders say they think would be worth -- worth taking. So I’d expect there to be real discussion that at the same time Trump has to be super careful that the photos of that meeting don’t come away with him kind of smiling too broadly, standing next to Vla -- Vladimir Putin who -- at the time when -- when this investigation by Robert Mueller is underway into Russian meddling."
