Sessions Knocks Gates’ Call for Immigration Reform After Microsoft Announces Job Cuts

‘I don’t think you can make the argument that we have a labor shortage’

Sessions Knocks Gates’s Call for Immigration Reform after Microsoft Announces Job Cuts (National Review Online)

Bill Gates’s New York Times op-ed from last week urged Congress to pass the Senate’s immigration reform bill, but Senator Jeff Sessions (R., Ala.) says the billionaire is wrong, especially in light of the announcement that Microsoft, which Gates founded, will cut 18,000 jobs in the next year.

In the op-ed, Sheldon Adelson, Warren Buffett, and Gates argue for passing the bill because it will provide more visas for STEM workers. But with Microsoft set to let go about one-sixth of its workforce, Sessions countered that bringing in more workers from other countries in such a loose labor market will make it even more difficult for Americans looking for work.
