W.H. Press Secretary Calls Soccer Players ‘American Footballers’

‘While the final score wasn’t exactly what they were hoping for, having the opportunity to inspire the next generation of American footballers is quite a legacy and it’s one they should be proud of’

Obama’s America (The Washington Free Beacon)

White House press secretary Josh Earnest referred to soccer players as “American footballers” on Wednesday, perpetuating what has become a troubling trend from the White House.

President Obama previously called the sport “football” at a press conference in Brussels last month.

Although Earnest opened his remarks on the World Cup innocently enough, using the correct term “soccer” five times in his statement, he ended with this stunning breach of U.S. protocol: “While the final score wasn’t exactly what they were hoping for, having the opportunity to inspire the next generation of American footballers is quite a legacy and it’s one they should be proud of.”
