Brownstein: Trump’s Backing ‘Away from the America-First’ Theme Toward a ‘More Conventional’ GOP Outlook

‘We are seeing an incredible amount of change at an unbelievable pace on many fronts’

EXCERPT:

BROWNSTEIN: "Well, look. We are seeing an incredible amount of change at an unbelievable pace on many fronts. But the pace, first of all — on many of the policy issues, particularly on trade and international alliance, the change is in a very consistent direction ,it is away from the populist, nationalist themes, the America-first themes that he ran on towards a more conventional Republican outlook on America’s interactions with the world. That has been a magnetic pull away from those kind of distinctive notes in his campaign back into the fold. Immigration is a big exception where under Attorney General Jeff Sessions he is still motoring down the path that he set during the campaign. But on the other fronts you are seeing, I think, the impact of the lack of an infrastructure in the Republican Party for those ideas. There really is not much there in Congress or think tanks or interest groups that want to push in this direction. All the push is in the other direction, and that's where you’ve seen the President move."
