CBS Explains New Gender Terms: ‘Agender,’ ‘Gender Queer,’ and ‘Gender Fluid’

REPORTER 2: "For starters, you might think that the only type of transgender individuals are those who go from male to female and those who go from female to male. On the contrary. Think of male and female as two binary ends of the spectrum. While many transgender people do transition from one end of the spectrum to the other, there are many others who identify as non-binary, meaning 'somewhere in the space between,' and in some cases, outside of the spectrum altogether. As with many spectrums, there are countless options along the gender non-binary. There is agender which is the absence of gender completely. These are people who feel they are neither male nor female. There are gender fluid and gender queer — terms for people who embrace a fluidity of gender identity, incorporating elements of both femininity and masculinity into their daily lives. In some cases, gender queer people embrace a fluidity of sexual orientation as well. And people like me, who identify with a gender we were given at birth, are known as cisgender or cis."
