CBS Explains New Gender Term: ‘Cisgender’ — Identifying as Your Actual Gender

‘It’s a very intentional term that demonstrates the awareness and I’d say care that trans people matter’

EXCERPT:

UNKNOWN 2: "My name is Angela Christaldi. I identify as a cisgender heterosexual woman and I prefer the pronouns she, her and hers. I first heard the term when I was in high school, I spend some time on Tumblr and people were using the term there. I wasn't really sure what it meant but I knew it had something to do with your gender identity but, like I said, I was kind of confused about it. So I didn't really start identifying as it until my freshman year of college. I went to something called 'safe zone training' which the school offers for anybody on campus, you can become certified — for the lack of a better word — and you discuss gender and sexuality and how to make people feel welcome. A lot of the professors go through it for the LGBTQIA students so they know how to make them feel comfortable and things like that. So I learned more about the term cisgender at that seminar and I feel like that's really when I started identifying as that because I think it's helpful to be inclusive of all people."
