Protests Erupt as DNC Names Tom Perez Next Chairman

The DNC's next chairmanship got off to a rocky start Saturday, with supporters for Keith Ellison repeatedly disrupting the incoming Chairman Tom Perez's introduction. The shouting occasionally led the erstwhile interim chairwoman Donna Brazile to call the proceedings to order.

Pro-Ellison DNC voters shouted, "Party for the people, not big money!"

Perez, after being announced he won 235 of 435 votes, and as a result the helms of the Democratic Party, orchestrated a call for unity.

Perez, audible on a hot mic, coached Brazile through calling a motion. 

"That motion we were talking about?" Perez is heard saying. "Whatever happened to that motion?"

Brazile then asked for a motion.

"I hear a motion by Mr. Saunders? Mr. Saunders? Mr. Applebaum? Mr. Buckley," Brazile says, apparently confused as to who was supposed to be motioning.

Buckley then motioned to suspend the rules and cast one ballot for Perez, which, after being seconded by labor leader and DNC member Stuart Applebaum, the party did.

Throughout the motion for unity, a sizable part of the audience shouted their disapproval. Brazile was forced to raise her voice to speak over the dissenting faction.
