White House press secretary and noted Guided by Voices fan Jay Carney surprised attendees at a sold-out GBV show at Washington, D.C.'s Black Cat last night when he appeared on stage to introduce the band.

Carney has spoken about his love of the band in the Washington Post, during a press briefing announcing that President Obama was headed to Dayton, Ohio ("home of...Guided by Voices, the greatest rock 'n' roll band of the modern era, in my humble opinion"), and once mistakenly referred to Senator Mitch McConnell as "Mitch Mitchell," explaining that "Mitch Mitchell" is both the name of Jimi Hendrix's drummer and the name of a Guided by Voices guitar player.
