MERKLEY: “Well, it isn’t just about the way they treated him like they insulted him. What they did is something unprecedented in U.S. history. They took the seat and they stole it from President Obama, refused to do the responsibilities under the Constitution. They did not vet the candidate. They did not vote on the candidate. Therefore, they put it in a time capsule. They took the seat, stole it, sent it forward a year hoping it would arrive with a Republican president and they succeeded. And what this does is really diminish the integrity of the Supreme Court and sets up a precedent that will be very difficult to deal with over time. It’s a huge mistake. If you care about the Supreme Court and you care about the integrity of the court, think about every 5-4 decision that comes in the future."
