Boehner on Benghazi Investigation: ‘I Don’t Want a Sideshow’
Boehner Defends Benghazi Investigation (The Wall Street Journal)
House Speaker John Boehner (R., Ohio) is defending a decision to set up a special committee to investigate a 2012 attack in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans, saying that the Obama administration had failed to turn over documents even though Congress had subpoenaed information.
The creation of a special committee, which was approved in a 232-186 vote last week, is the newest flashpoint in a Congress deeply divided along party lines. Democrats have complained that Republicans are politicizing the deaths in order to raise campaign funds before the 2014 mid-term elections and to harm Hillary Clinton, who was secretary of state at the time of the attacks and is considered to be a potential 2016 presidential nominee. Republicans say that the Obama administration has never leveled with the public about what happened, including why there was not more security.
