A reporter for The Blade, Chris Johnson, used his opportunity to ask President Obama a question during his final press to laud the outgoing chief executive for his many "achievements" on gay rights, and then set him up to attack Donald Trump.

Here's an excerpt transcript of their exchange:

JOHNSON: “On LGBT rights, we have seen a lot of achievements over the past 8 years, including signing hate crime protection legislation, ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ repeal, marriage equality nationwide and ensuring transgender people feel visible and respected. How do you think LGBT rights will rank in terms of your accomplishments and your legacy? And how confident are you that Congress will endure or continue under the President-elect?”
OBAMA: “I could not be prouder of the transformation that has taken place in our society just in the last decade. And I have said before, I think we made some useful contributions to it, but the primary heroes in this stage of our growth as a democracy and as a society are all the individual activists and sons and daughters and couples who courageously said, ‘This is who I am, and I am proud of it.’ That opened people’s minds and opened their hearts. And eventually, laws caught up, but I don’t think any of that would have happened without the activism, in some cases loud and noisy, but in some cases just quiet and very personal.”
