University of Missouri defensive end Michael Sam became national news earlier this year when he revealed that he was gay, potentially making him the NFL’s first openly gay player… depending on whether or not he actually got drafted by a team. On Saturday evening, that possibility became a reality when the St. Louis Rams drafted him in the 7th round, as the 249th overall pick.

Upon the selection being announced, the crowd at Radio City Music Hall broke out into loud cheers and applause. ESPN later aired footage of Sam getting the phone call from the Rams, sobbing with joy, and — like most draftees with a significant other tend to do — sharing a kiss with his boyfriend. The pair also celebrated by smashing cake in each other’s faces.
