York: Lewis’ Comment Wouldn’t Have Caught Fire If He Were ‘Obscure Backbencher’
‘The question is whether questioning Trump’s legitimacy will actually spread to more moderate Democrats’
EXCERPT:
YORK: "You’re absolutely right about that. If it were some obscure backbencher who said this, it wouldn’t have caught fire the way that it did. John Lewis with his stature— not just among Democrats but among Republicans and everyone else — John Lewis sort of demanded attention by saying this. Attention had to be paid. And if you'll notice, even the people who say they disagree with John Lewis always include in their disagreement an expression of respect for what John Lewis did 50 years ago in the Civil Rights movement. There is no doubt that this got to be a bigger deal because of the influence and stature of John Lewis."
