David Axelrod on Trump: When You Press Send on a Nuke, ‘There’s No Deleting’ It (Mediaite)

Yesterday, President-elect Donald Trump took to Twitter to set nerves on edge by declaring that the United States needed to strengthen and expand its nuclear weapons capability. Besides it flying in the face of decades of American policy regarding nuclear nonproliferation, Trump also appeared to be parroting remarks made by Vladimir Putin on strengthening the nuclear arsenal.

In response to Trump’s nuclear policy by tweet, former Obama adviser David Axelrod appeared on CNN’s New Day to give his take. Speaking to co-hosts Chris Cuomo and Alisyn Camrerota, the CNN political commentator noted that the incoming POTUS made controversial comments about nukes during the campaign, claiming South Korea and Japan should perhaps have the weapons and wondering why America has them if they aren’t prepared to use them.

Highlighting that past presidents since John F. Kennedy has pushed towards nonproliferation and that the United States has the capacity to “destroy the planet a thousand times over,” Axelrod wondered what signal Trump is sending the world now.
