Rep. Emanuel Cleaver: Paul Ryan Takes Quotes from the Racist Charles Murray

‘If you know the least, you shouldn’t speak the loudest ... does [Ryan] embrace Charles Murray or not?’

RYAN: "We have got a tailspin of culture in our inner cities in particular of men not working, and just generations of men not even thinking about working."

HALL: "Joining me now is Missouri Democratic congressman and member of the Congressional Black Caucus, Emanuel Cleaver. Sir, thank you so much for your time today."
CLEAVER: "Good to be with you."
HALL: "We all know that congressman Ryan later said that he was inarticulate, and perhaps said what he was thinkingg in an in-artful way. I think that's the best way to characterize how he tried to clarify it. What do you hope to accomplish with this meeting?"
CLEAVER: "Well, we meet every Wednesday and the CBC has been holding these meetings every Wednesday for the last 40, 41 years now, and so we often will have a person to come in. Marcia Fudge, our chairperson, runs a very tight ship. We are going to have a candid conversation with Congressman Ryan, but I think you are going to find at the end of the meeting that, you know, she will push the meeting so that there is will be much more light than heat. I think that Chairman Ryan is going to be given an opportunity to explain what he said. The problem though is that he was quoting Charles Murray who has been poring racist sewage into open ears for generations now. He has been pushing his theories of the bell curve and white supremacy. And Ryan quoted him as one of the authorities. And he later said that he didn't know about Murray's background. Well, you know, which suggests ignorance. And so if you know the least, you should not speak the loudest, and that got him into some trouble and I think that's what people want to know is does he embrace Charles Murray or not?"
