George Will to Stephen Colbert: Liberals Want Everything to Stay the Same

‘Whatever exists should continue’

COLBERT: "The age of this debate  is great, I love things that are old. I'm a conservative, you're a conservative. I don't think that anything should ever change. Do you think that Wrigley Field --"
WILL: "That makes you a liberal."
COLBERT: "That nothing should ever change?"
WILL: "That's right."
COLBERT: "I didn't realize that."
WILL: "Oh yeah."
COLBERT: "But conservatives want to conserve things. I hate to go all etymological on you, you know? I know you're a bit of a wordsmith. But how -- why do liberals want things to stay the same?"
WILL: "Because whatever exists should continue. 1935 Social Security should -- do you drive a 1935 car?"
COLBERT: "No, I drive a Tesla."
WILL: "I'm sure you do."
COLBERT: "I do, I do."
WILL: "Do you watch a 1935 television set? I don't think so."
COLBERT: "No, in 1935 a television set I think was a potato field."
WILL: "That's right. But Social Security liberals believe should go on just as it always has."
COLBERT: "So we should get rid of Social Security?"
WILL: "No."
COLBERT: "Oh, I think we should. Am I more of a conservative than you are?"
WILL: "Yes."
COLBERT: "OK. I was trying to lead you into a field where old people would shoot you in the head."
