Obama, Media Discourage Associating Boston Terrorists with Islam

Chris Cuomo, Diane Sawyer, Bob Schieffer all downplay religious motivations

After the Boston Marathon bombing suspects' names and identities were revealed, a number of media personalities grappled with how to handle the conspirators' devotion to Islamic teachings.

ABC's Martha Raddatz reported on captions underneath photos on one of the boys' social media sites, which included references to Islam. "And as we hear those, Martha," Sawyer said, "I keep thinking about the uncle saying again, 'anyone who attaches this to our religion to my religion, that is a fraud.'"

Chris Cuomo said that it's premature to consider the role religion played, "As we continue to pursue motivation here it is just as likely at this point that these two men decided to just become crazed killers as it is that they're connected to any larger ideal."

CBS anchor Bob Schieffer said that the boys do not fit a terrorist profile. "We don't have any idea of what their motivation was," he said, "and they're not the kind of young people we normally see associated with something like this."
