Ind. School Superintendent Defends Plan to Axe Valedictorian Title: ‘We’ve a Very Competitive Environment’

‘We have tremendous competition’

MELIN: "No, we have a very competitive environment. You know -- a largest high school we have 68 students with a 4.0 grade point average or higher, 11 with a 5.0 grade point average or higher. We have tremendous competition. There are still class ranks. There are still competition internally. But what happens is the -- the having the just the title of val or sal sometimes creates a situation where kids are making decisions to take courses or not take courses to just to earn the title --"
KILMEADE: "Right."
MELIN: "-- and not what's in their best interest."
