CNN continued its wall-to-wall coverage of the missing Malaysia Airlines flight 370 Wednesday night with the release of satellite images from the Chinese that may show pieces of the plane in the water south of Vietnam. To help Piers Morgan understand just what he was looking at in the just-released photos, which were actually taken Sunday just after the plane went missing, Bill Nye “the Science Guy” appeared on CNN as an aviation expert, thanks to his days spent at Boeing studying black boxes.

Asked by Morgan to share what his “gut” tells him happened to the plane — not the type of question a scientist is used to fielding — Nye said, “I would not be surprised to find that those satellite images do represent some part of the plane.” He suspected that the Chinese have not released full resolution images because they do not want the rest of the world to know the strength of their spy satellites.

“I’ve spent a lot of time with UFO images,” Nye said later, contributing to the conspiracy theory nature of this entire story by theorizing about the “triangular” nature of the image on the screen. He ultimately admitted that this was all “speculation,” adding, “but you can’t help it.”
