How the Media Covers Obstructionism: Democrats vs. GOP [Montage]

Sometimes shutting down government is great

On Wednesday afternoon Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) announced Democrats would launch a "sit in" to obstruct proceedings of the House of Representatives, vowing to remain seated on the floor until a vote was called on the so-called "No-Fly/No-Buy" bill.

The media, sensing a spectacle, swooned.

"An extraordinary sit-in," Savannah Guthrie triumphed.

"Truly one of the most dramatic demonstrations on the House floor in modern American history," celebrated NBC's Peter Alexander.

"A protest like we've never seen before," Jon Karl beamed. "Democrats refused to give in."

Democrats admitted having no specific plan other than obstructing legislative proceedings. The speaker of the House, Paul Ryan, attacked the protest as a "publicity stunt" wherein Democrats were turning the Orlando tragedy into a fund-raising opportunity.

Now rewind the tape to October 2013, when the media covered the 2013 government shutdown.

Far from being an act of principled rebellion, Republicans were smeared as "terrorists" who were "pointing a gun to the head of the American people." They "inmates were running the asylum." George Stephanopoulos even predicted the move would result in Republicans being relegated to the minority "for a generation."

It should also be noted that Republicans didn't explicitly shut down the government, like Democrats did Congress on Wednesday/Thursday. They passed a budget, which President Obama vetoed, which consequently resulted in a government shutdown.
