Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014, Rice said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that it would be a “grave mistake” for Russia to intervene militarily in Ukraine. Rice said during that during President Barack Obama's phone conversation Friday with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the two leaders agreed that a political settlement in Kiev should ensure the unity of the country and the right of Ukrainians to express their free will.
