Speaker Boehner Sings Uncle Remus Song After Announcing Debt Ceiling Deal (Mediaite)

At a press conference on Tuesday, Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) explained to reporters a plan to increase the debt ceiling, without attaching any demands to it, by allowing Democrats and a small number of Republicans to pass the measure. At the conclusion of the press conference, Boehner strolled away from the podium singing “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah,” originally from the 1946 film Song of the South.

That clean debt ceiling increase passed in the House of Representatives Tuesday night, 221 to 201, with 28 Republicans joining all but two Democrats.

In the film Song of the South, the song “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah” was first sung by Uncle Remus, a former slave who tells stories about anthropomorphic woodland creatures to a plantation owner’s son. The 1946 Disney film has been controversial since its opening, and has never been made available for salein the United States. The song has since been covered by artists ranging from The Jackson 5 to The Hollies to Miley Cyrus.
