MSBNC’s Reid Talks with Black American Voters in S.C., and Finds No Clinton Supporters

‘Influence of young voters over all voters is going to be an interesting factor here’

REID: “All right, well, Steve, the Sanders campaign is operating a very big, aggressive operation throughout the state of South Carolina. This is one of ten offices that they’re operating throughout the state. They actually have more offices and more staff than the Clinton campaign. Going to give you a little quick look if Joe can follow me and take a look at some of the folks that are working here. And we actually went out yesterday with some of the canvassers from this office, Steve. And they were going door to door, talking to black voters in this neighborhood in Columbia. We talked to a lot of undecided voters. They talked to voters who are decided for Bernie. We actually didn’t run into any Clinton supporters, which is interesting because that’s sort of the polling that we’ve heard about black voters in the state. Let’s take a listen to one of the voters that —  was ‘feeling the Bern’ yesterday. He is a young voter, he’s a young dad. And this is what he had to say about why he’s supporting Sanders.”

REID (voice-over): “Have you made a decision on who you are going to support?”
SHAW: “If I had to vote today, I would be leaning toward team Bernie.”
REID (voice-over): “And tell me why?”
SHAW: “I like everything Bernie stands for, like policies and everything he stands behind. Like the things he’s talking about, versus what the other candidates are talking.”

REID: “Now, Steve, we’ve talked a lot about the age gap, the generation gap that we’re seeing with black voters as well, where you have older voters who are more aligned with Hillary Clinton, and younger voters who are drifting toward Sanders. But what’s interesting about one of the voters that we talked to yesterday, is that this is an older voter, this is a Clinton voter, she is in that demographic, but she’s undecided. And take a listen to what she said is helping her to make up her mind.”

BEACHAM: “My decisions would be based on the younger people. You know, what will benefit them, incarceration of the young black men. Social security, I can work [with].”
[clip ends]
REID: “And so, Steve, of course, that influence of younger voters over older voters, is going to be an interesting factor here. One quick other fact, voters can actually already be voting here in South Carolina, because there is early vote, there is early absentee vote. So, there are people who’ve already begun casting ballots. The Sanders campaign also taking aggressive opportunities to do that. Back to you, Steve.”
