Mich. Rep. Lawrence on Flint Water Crisis: ‘Clearly There Has Been a Failure’

‘I call for this hearing because I don’t want this to ever happen again’

DÍAZ-BALART: “And joining me now, it’s a Congresswoman, as Rachel just mentioned, Michigan Representative, Brenda Lawrence. Congresswoman, good to see you.”
LAWRENCE: “Good to see you as well.”
DÍAZ-BALART: “How likely is it that the governor will appear before Congress?”
LAWRENCE: “So, first of all, I want to thank my ranking member, Mr. Cummings, and the chair of the Oversight Government Reform Committee, Mr. Chaffetz, Congressman Chaffetz for expediting my request. I represent Michigan, the Detroit water, but I am the ranking member on the subcommittee of the interior Clean Water Act [IPA]. Our responsibility is to ensure an oversight that government is working, that they have the resources and that they’re in compliance with their rules and regulations that are put out out for our country. Clearly, there has been a failure. There is no reason why today in America, that we are having this conversation about water, a simple trust that we have as American cities that our food will be safe to consume, that the air we breathe will be clean, and that the water will be safe for consumption. That has — it has been a failure. I call for this hearing because I do not want this to ever happen again in America. Clearly, there has been some failures, some breakdowns, and obviously, we need to fix this.”
DÍAZ-BALART: “You know, I couldn’t agree with you more.”
