TIME’s Nancy Gibbs: Bill Clinton ‘Looks Tired’; ‘There’s a Frailness’ to Him

RUSH TRANSCRIPT:

SCARBOROUGH: “You know what’s so interesting is Bill Clinton has always been as Joe Klein says, the big dog. He wrote what I wouldn’t say but what a lot of people said seeing Bill Clinton off camera —“
GIBBS: “He looks tired.”
SCARBOROUGH: “The big dog is getting old and a little scruffy around the edges. He doesn’t have the bite he once had. Joe Klein says Donald Trump makes Bill Clinton look old.
GIBBS: “Yeah. I think that head to head is a fascinating one to watch. Whether at some point Clinton tax the bait — is he the most disciplined surrogate we’ve ever seen before? Not in the past. So will he be able to be disciplined this time?”
UNKNOWN MALE: “It’s interesting. They’re not very far apart in age. 
SCARBOROUGH: “I know. Isn’t that fascinating?” [crosstalk] 
UNKNOWN MALE: “They’re almost exactly the same age.”
SCARBOROUGH: “And I would guess that Bill Clinton has led a healthier life. He’s had heart problems. He looks more tired out there. How old is Bill Clinton?”
UNKNOWN MALE: “I think they’re literally the same age. Donald Trump is 69.” 
SCARBOROUGH: “He does as Joe Klein says, he’s starting to look a little tired.”
GIBBS: “I’ve seen him last this summer. Intelligence and everything is still there but there’s a frailness.”
UNKNOWN MALE: “Elderly quality.”
GIBBS: “Which is surprising because he’s such a large —“
UNKNOWN MALE: “That’s what happens when you become vegan.”
SCARBOROUGH: “Now they say all Trump needs to do is get the votes. You look at the lines, though, as Carville said, people coming out. Have we seen anything like this? Bernie’s doing it on the Democratic side, too.”
GIBBS: “Remember, if Trump were only running against one person the way Bernie is, then this whole landscape would be looking very different.” 
SCARBOROUGH: “Right. If Bernie had ten Democratic opponents, he would be the one in first place, right, most likely?”
GIBBS: “Yes.”
