Bill Nye: Warm Weather Due to Global Warming; Fixing Climate Will Defeat ISIS

‘If the United States did not need the energy from elsewhere in the form of fossil fuels, it would greatly affect the relationship between governments and the effectiveness of terrorists because they wouldn’t be able to get money for black market oil’

RUSSERT: “November according to NOAA the warmest month on record in the history of the world, at least in what we have been able to record. Climate change, I would probably suspect, is probably behind that. But when you have the warmest month on record in the history of the world, is this the beginning of the beginning of this type of weather extreme? Because I remember last year, Buffalo, New York, my father’s hometown, the worst snow they had ever seen in November and December. Now you would be hard pressed to find even half an inch. What’s going on?”
NYE: “Well, so as we say, the phrase ‘climate change’ is accurate because it means the local climates are changing. This means sometimes you’re going to have more snow, sometimes you’re going to have more warmth. But, in general, all the effects will be amplified. The differences — the colds will be colder and the warms will be warmer. Now, this is the place for politics is my understanding, and I claim, and this is of you guys, that deniers are out there and they’re going to go wild. But what is everybody concerned about? Everybody is concerned about jobs, everybody is concerned about the economy and everybody is concerned about security, or international relations or terrorism. We in the scientific community connect all of these things with climate change. If the United States did not need the energy from elsewhere in the form of fossil fuels, it would greatly affect the relationship between governments and the effectiveness of terrorists because they wouldn’t be able to get money for black market oil. For example, the economy, if we were building wind turbines in West Virginia and Kentucky instead of digging up these ancient layers of coal, we would produce at least 50,000 jobs in each of the two states and Commonwealth. And we would — we would curtail the use of fossil fuels. This should be a boom to the U.S. economy. And so, why nobody won’t say anything about — this is what I would call charming.”
RUSSERT: “I think it has been discussed —“
NYE: “And also troubling.”
RUSSERT: “I think it has been discussed extensively, but on your point, the Pentagon has said that climate change is one of the greatest national security threats there is out there.”
NYE: “So here’s the question.”
RUSSERT: “Yeah.”
NYE: “I have a question for you, hard-hitting investigative journalist. Yes — the conservative can win the primaries without any Millenial votes, right? Nobody in their 20s or early 30s — “
RUSSERT: “In theory.”
NYE: “— is needed to win the primary. Yeah.”
RUSSERT: “Sure.”
NYE: “But can you win — can the conservative win the national election for president and deny climate change and alienate Millenials? And this is — I tried to do the analysis based on the number of electoral votes in each state, it’s a near run thing. It’s a very close call. [crosstalk]
