Fmr. Secretary of Defense Bill Cohen: ‘I’m Quite Skeptical’ About Iran Nuke Deal

‘We’ll have to wait and see; I think we’ve lost a lot of support in the region’

COHEN: “I think what has happened in the Middle East with Iran, is that we have lost support with our key allies who no longer trust us, frankly, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, the Israelis, others in the region, in the way in which this was handled and the fact that it's ambiguous in terms of Iran having an enrichment capability. The U.N. Security Council resolutions actually prohibited enrichment, but it appears that we're going to allow them to enrich at a level below 20 percent, perhaps around 5 percent. But under any circumstances, allowing them to enrich does pose a problem in the future. So I think we'll have to wait and see, but I think we've lost a lot of support in the region. Number one, because of the agreement itself which the Iranians, by the way, say is simply a process, not an agreement, the beginning of a process. And on the other side we'll just have to wait and see where it turns out, but I'm quite skeptical that this is going to beneficial ultimately.”
