General Jack Keane: Egypt Has Dealt a ‘Stunning Blow’ to the Muslim Brotherhood

General Keane assesses Egypt’s official declaration that the Muslim Brotherhood is a terrorist group

COLBY: "So since 2011 when Hosni Mubarak was out of power, the Muslim Brotherhood has played a significant role. They won at least five elections, there are more than a million people that support the group, and now they're all considered part of a terrorist organization. What are the implications first in Egypt?”
KEANE: “Frankly the military regime has been in power since Morsi was removed. [INDECIPHERABLE]. They absolutely -- after they witnessed the Muslim Brotherhood controlling the country and moving it to an Islamist state, the people of Egypt did not want that. They took to the streets over that. The military regime believes that they're answering the clarion call of the people by suppressing the Muslim Brotherhood. They do not want them to participate in the political process. Again, that’s certainly not the democratic values that we hope to utilize in this country. But they have very strong feelings about it, and as you correctly identified, this as a stunning blow to them because what this means is any member of the Muslim Brotherhood could be arrested."
COLBY: "Arrested, prosecuted, even killed."
KEANE: "Yeah, absolutely."
