Jay Carney Denies Consideration of Possible U.S. Amnesty for Edward Snowden

‘Our position has not changed on that matter at all’

Jay Carney Responds to 60 Minutes’ NSA Report, Possibility of ‘Amnesty’ for Snowden (Mediaite)

More than six months after Edward Snowden’s leaks first came to light, the NSA attempted to set the record straight about the extent of its surveillance and data-gathering practices by giving CBS News’ 60 Minutes unprecedented access to its facilities and personnel. During Monday’s White House press briefing, Jay Carney was forced to address the report, which was heavily criticized by several journalists for taking an uncritical look at the agency.

Specifically, Carney discussed the suggestion Rick Ledgett, the man who runs the NSA’s Snowden task force, made to 60 Minutes about the U.S. offering possible “amnesty” to Snowden in exchange for assurance that he would not and could not release any more classified documents.
