‘Domestic violent extremism is the most acute threat, terrorism related threat, that we are seeing to our homeland’

Runaway inflation, a broken national supply chain, and an influx of illegal immigrants pouring across the southern border are just a few of the major issues facing congressional Democrats and the Biden administration. While these glaring real-world challenges impact Americans of all backgrounds, the Washington DC power brokers have identified a separate matter as their prime focus, one they regard as the most serious threat facing this country, the danger of “Domestic Terrorism and Homegrown Violent Extremism.”

On January 22, 2021, two days after Joe Biden was sworn in as president, new White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki proclaimed, “The rise of domestic violent extremism is a serious and growing national security threat. The Biden administration will confront this threat with the necessary resources and resolve.”

Psaki’s statement came just weeks after the events of January 6th at the US Capitol which Democrats have seized on as the prime indicator for why an increased federal effort toward combating homegrown, domestic terrorism is a critical policy initiative.

“The most dangerous domestic terror threat facing America today comes from the forces that attacked our government on January 6th,” according to Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.). Several other Democratic members of Congress have made similar comments regarding the threat of domestic terrorism from American citizens.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) remarked that, “We have a domestic terrorism challenge in this country.”

Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) indicated that the Biden administration needed to take more action stating, “For too long our federal government has failed to address the growing terrorist menace in our own backyard.”

Durbin’s fellow Senator, Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), echoed this sentiment saying, “What we need is a focus in homeland security on domestic terrorism.”

The Secretary of homeland security, Alejandro Mayorkas, is certainly receptive to this train of thought and is committing DHS resources to the cause. During an interview on CNN, Mayorkas referred to the “threat of domestic terrorism” as “one of the greatest threats that we face currently on our homeland.”

Another member of President Biden’s cabinet, Attorney General Merrick Garland, referred to the “domestic violent extremist threat” as “rapidly evolving.” Part of this evolving threat Garland highlighted is “racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists, specifically those who advocate for the superiority of the white race.”

Garland has the support of President Biden in dedicating resources toward dealing with ‘white supremacist violence.’ During a speech in June, Biden said, “Terrorism from white supremacy is the most lethal threat to the homeland today. Not ISIS, not Al-Qaeda, white supremacists.”

And just this past week Biden linked the events of January 6th to white supremacy when he said, “The violent, deadly insurrection on the Capitol nine months ago, it was about white supremacy in my view.”

These statements from elected officials and cabinet heads bring unsettling questions to mind. How is the federal government under the Biden administration prioritizing its time and resources? Do many of the most powerful individuals in Washington DC view their political opponents as extremists and potential domestic terrorists? What new domestic terrorism related federal policies may be on the horizon?

Time will tell for how the Biden administration continues on this path, but the current trend is disturbing.
