Michael McFaul on Gen. Milley: Secret Phone Call Story Is ‘Much Ado About Nothing’

‘‘There is no secret phone call by the chairman of the Joint Staff to anybody in the world let alone to a Chinese counterpart’’

EXCERPT:

McFAUL: "Andrea, I just can’t help but mention first, when you said is there a lot of anxiety at the White House over the Bob Woodward book, I worked at the White House when one of his books dropped during the Obama years and shortly after that, my boss, General Jones, the National Security Advisor was asked to step down. So there is always drama about a Bob Woodward book. And secondly, I just want to underscore this point about General Milley that you were just talking about with Courtney. This sounds to me like somebody who participated in many of these phone calls and read about them back when Admiral Mullen was the chairman, and General Makarov in Russia. This is standard operating procedure. There is no secret phone calls by the Chairman of the Joint Staff to anybody in the world, let alone to a Chinese counterpart. So that part, I just think is much ado about nothing.”conducted."
