NBC’s Welker: Clinton Campaign ‘Still in Damage Control Mode’ over E-mail Scandal

‘The inspector general says there were two top secret e-mails in her files’

LAUER: “You just heard Donald Trump mention Hillary Clinton's e-mail controversy. How her campaign is dealing with the latest fallout after Clinton turned over her personal server to the FBI. NBC’s Kristen Welker has more on that. Kristen, good morning to you.”

WELKER: “Matt, good morning to you. Secretary Clinton doesn't have any public events on her schedule today but her campaign is still in damage control mode over that e-mail issue. Clinton’s campaign spokeswoman Jen Palmieri e-mailing supporters Wednesday, writing: ‘Hillary didn't send any classified materials over e-mail.’ She also stressed there is no criminal probe. Now the Clinton campaign has turned over her private e-mail server to the FBI. The Inspector General says there were two top secret e-mails in her files. Clinton has consistently said any e-mails that were classified were not marked as such at the time she sent them. Still the e-mails have becomes father for Republican candidates who say, it’s suggest Clinton can't be trusted and polls show it has contributed to an erosion in the public’s trust in Clinton. One campaign official tells me, they have accepted the reality, these e-mail issue will be present throughout the campaign. Clinton heads to the Iowa state fair this weekend where she's going to try to turn the page. Meanwhile, Vice President Joe Biden is vacationing in South Carolina where he's expected to consult with family and friends about the possibility of running.”
