Matthews: It Saddened Me When Obama Said We Need One-Party Rule to Do Things

‘That was sad to me, because I don’t think we’re going to get a one party situation in this country for a long time’

MATTHEWS: “And then last night, in really spelling it out, he said when I said, ‘Well can't we compromise and get some things done?’ He said, ‘Well, you know, great changes only come when one party calls the shots. Whether it was Roosevelt in the early '30s or LBJ after Kennedy's assassination, or in the early year of Ronald Reagan’s Administration when you had sort of a one-party dictate.’ But that's sad to me because I don't think we're going to get a one-party situation in this country for a long time now. I can see us pretty much split down the middle for a long time. He’s basically saying we can't do anything big as long as that's the case. That bothered me."
