W.H.: Republicans Should Fund Ex-Im Bank Since Republican Presidents Have Before

‘This time should not have been any different’

SCHULTZ: “Reauthorizing Ex-Im bank has happened 16 times in past Congresses. All with broad bipartisan majorities. The past 13 presidents, Republicans and Democrats, have supported the bank. So this time should not have been any different. As we’ve said, one of the more likely vehicles to pass Congress over the past few weeks is this transportation bill. That’s why we thought it should have been attached. That’s why the Senate apparently shared our view. Unfortunately, you had the speaker of the House use a word to describe leader McConnell’s bill, a word that I can't even use in public.”

NN REPORTER: “Oh, maybe behind the podium.”

SCHULTZ: “Yeah, yeah, from the podium. – (laughter) -- Fair enough. But if you're asking me to evaluate the level of dysfunction in the Republican Congress, I’m happy to engage you on that because it's rare that we've seen this level of distrust between two leaders and of separate chambers but from the both parties. And if you just take a step back and you look at what we've experienced over the past few days and weeks, I would like to first remind you of the aftermath of the 2014 mid-terms where leader McConnell and Speaker Boehner jointly penned an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal, where they thought -- they felt confident in their ability to get Congress working again. I think we know that the results are in and I’m not confident they lived up to their promise.”
