Vice President Kamala Harris took questions from reporters on a variety of issues, and delivered a confident one-word answer to a question about taking responsibility for the situation at the southern border.

On Wednesday, President Joe Biden announced that he was tasking VP Harris with leading the response to the situation at the border, and telling reporters “When she speaks, she speaks for me. Doesn’t have to check with me, she knows what she’s doing.”

During a brief gaggle with reporters Friday following a listening session at the Boys and Girls Club in New Haven, Connecticut, Harris answered questions from reporters about the recent raft of voting restrictions passed in states like Georgia, the president’s thoughts on the filibuster, possible executive actions on Democratic priorities, and whether or not she was “concerned” about the political risks in taking on the border situation herself:

Q The border rules have been a problem — an intractable problem for multiple presidents. Are you concerned at all about the political risks that come with accepting this responsibility?

THE VICE PRESIDENT: No.

Q Madam Vice President, you — when you were running for President, came up with some very creative, aggressive, different ways you could use executive action on a number of issues: teachers, guns — which, I know, for both of you senators is an issue very near and dear to your heart. Are you pushing the President, or suggesting to the President that he adopt some of those proposals you came up with to be a little more aggressive with executive action going forward?

THE VICE PRESIDENT: I think the President has been quite obvious in his intention to be bold. Again, I’ll go back to the occasion for this visit, which is the American Rescue Plan — lifting half of America’s children out of poverty.
