CBSN: FBI Data Shows Largest Spike in U.S. Murder Rate Since 1995, Up 18% From 2020

‘Maybe this is a little speculation but the pandemic has something to do with it’

EXCERPT:

RIVERO: "The FBI has released new data showing a major increase in murders last year in the U.S. The final numbers for 2020 will be released in late September. Early data points to a potential spike of around 25 percent, an increase we haven't seen since 1995. The story is not looking good for 2021 either. According to the FBI, homicides are up 18 percent compared to the same period last year. That's according to a survey of 37 U.S. cities. For more, let's bring in CBS News Justice and Homeland Security correspondent, Jeff Pegues. Jeff, hi there. Great to see you. So Jeff, do we know why murder rates continue to be so high in the first quarter of 2021? Is this somehow a result of the pandemic and everyone being, I don't know, squashed together for so long?"
