David Drucker: The Democratic Control of Washington Is Not As Effective As It Would Be If There Was Shared Control

‘Republicans have to find an effective way to communicate to suburban voters’

EXCERPT:

DRUCKER: “Well, look, first of all, for Republicans today, all politics is cultural. It's meeting the demands of their base to talk about these issues, which for many of them are serious issues, even though they seem less salient for the broader electorate. I think the question for Joe Biden is can he take his success from this piece of legislation, effectively deal with what is an emerging crisis at the southern border because of some of his new immigration policies, deal with that. Will public schools reopen? That is a promise that he made even though he doesn’t have control over teachers unions and local school boards. People are going to expect him to deliver on that. In the meantime, Republicans, I think, have to find an effective way to communicate to suburban voters and independent voters that they deserve to offer a counterweight to Biden's leadership. That full Democratic control of Washington is not as effective as it would be if there was shared control. I think they are still searching for a unified message that does that. Something that will bring along their base but also appeal to voters who are not their base. And of course, sitting in the middle of all of this is former president Donald Trump, because he remains an ever-present figure within this ecosphere, that could also have an impact on how voters, Democrat and Republican, approach the midterm elections.”
