Karen Finney: Clinton Had No Classified Info on Private Server

‘There were other modes she used to communicate classified information’

[rush transcript]

LUI: “Secretary of state here, Karen, is that the right distribution channel to have communications? That’s what the critics are really asking here. Why were there no red flags along the way to say ‘Hey, as secretary of state of the United States, you should be using official email?”

FINNEY: “Here’s the thing on that. I mean, couple of things, obviously it was no secret that she was using a private email address. As you pointed out in the story over there, secretary -- former secretary of state Colin Powell had her email address. There wasn’t a secret that she was using that email address. But here's what I think the misunderstanding has come from the beginning of this story. There’s a presumption that using personal email is the only form of communication. There are multiple channels for the secretary of state to communicate classified information. There are cables; there are phone calls; there are direct meetings. Those are the modes through which she used for classified or sensitive communications. Again, as we've said all along, I think what you see, at least in the first batch of 55,000, she's talking about I want to get an ice-tea. She’s talking about, like you said, what happened, I thought there was a cabinet meeting. I think you see a little bit of tension from that early period in her tenure as secretary of state and White House as we all sort of read about at the time. Again, I guess what I would say is, we've made it very clear that in these 55,000 pages, you're not seeing someone who was communicating classified information. She was -- these were mundane sort of emails and again, there were other modes that she used for -- to communicate classified information.”
