Rep. Mike Kelly: Dems Supporting Protests While Opposing Trump’s Campaign Rallies Is ‘Double Standard’

‘There’s such a double standard’

Pennsylvania Republican Rep. Mike Kelly argued Tuesday that Democrats who support large political protests during the coronavirus pandemic while criticizing President Trump for holding campaign rallies are contradicting themselves.

Trump held a rally recently in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His planned rally in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, was cancelled due to weather and it's likely to be rescheduled. Vice President Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, hasn't held any in-person campaign rallies during the pandemic.

"What I don't understand, I'm going to be very honest with you, is how in the world in some parts of this country you can have thousands of people assemble, burn police cars, break in and destroy private public property, pull down statues and monuments and we say, 'Well, people will do what people will do' and say, 'well, that's okay,'" said Kelly, referring to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's reaction to protestors pulling down a statue of Christopher Columbus in Baltimore.

Kelly's comments were made during a press call with House Republican Whip Rep. Steve Scalise, Louisiana, that was organized by the Trump campaign.

"But you know what? If the president holds a rally somewhere and people assemble there, 'oh my god, he's putting people in danger.' There's such a double standard," Kelly also said.

Before Trump's rally in Tulsa, Pelosi said the president was "endangering" the lives of his supporters with the event, calling it an "ego trip in Tulsa."

Last week, Pelosi was asked about the protesters who pulled down a Columbus statue when she said "people will do what they do."
