Willie Geist: Trump’s Trying to Create an Alternate Reality Where He’s Done a Great Job Handling the Virus

‘He is worried he is going to lose in November’

GEIST: "Yeah, I was just thinking of that same line, 'I take no responsibility.' He later said, 'I give myself a ten out of ten on performance.' He is unable to show what he believes any weakness in reflecting on the way he’s conducted himself and handled this crisis. And what a strange framing, to say it is a great honor. First of all, to be completely wrong on the facts, as you guys just laid out with that graphic. But even if he were correct, we’re going to hit 100,000 people dead from coronavirus sometime next week. A great honor? Isn’t that an odd way to talk about a pandemic and a crisis that killed 100,000 people, has 1.5 million cases and more than that in this country right now? A great honor? He goes in, he says, 'I wear these numbers like a badge of honor,' a couple of days ago. Jared Kushner famously said, 'This is a great success story,' the way this administration has handled this. President Trump said, 'We have prevailed on testing. We did the job. It is time to turn the corner.' And as you say, this all fits into his concerns about re-election, which we see in another poll yesterday. He’s worried that he is going to lose in November, so he is trying to create an alternate reality where everything is just fine and he’s done a great job handling this pandemic.”
