Billionaire Sam Zell Says Economy ‘Permanently Scarred’ By Pandemic, Some Business ‘Can’t Reopen’

‘There’s very little doubt that we are all going to be permanently scarred by having lived through this’

EXCERPT:

REPORTER: "Sam, my grandparents were permanently scarred by their experience in the Great Depression. You are old enough --"
ZELL: "You bet."
REPORTER: "-- to have known a lot about that generation. [crosstalk] Do you think this is going to be something like that?"
ZELL: "Yep. Yep. Yeah. As a matter of fact it’s really funny that you should say that. Because the way I described it to people I said,  was in high school in the 1950’s. And even in the 1950’s, which was 20 years after the end of the World War II or to come at five years after the Russian — end of World War II, 25 years after the end of the Depression, there were still parents of friends of mine who talked about the Depression and talked about the impact on their family. And 'permanently scarred,’ I think, is exactly the right word. And I think there’s very little doubt that we are all going to be permanently scarred by having lived through this -- this -- this pandemic.”
