Juan Williams: ‘Trump Has Become the Defining Politician of This Time’

‘And what you know in terms of the voter response, either Bernie or Joe Biden, they are looking for somebody who can take on Donald Trump’

EXCERPT:

WILLIAMS: "I mean, it is about the candidate's message. To me though, even watching tonight the Democrats, the Democratic race has been about Donald Trump. I think Trump has become the defining politician of this time. And what you know in terms of the voter response, either Bernie or Joe Biden, is they are looking for somebody who can take on Donald Trump. And as Chris was saying earlier, we had a phase where it looked like yes, that’s Joe Biden. Joe Biden has kind of been known quantity to be put out there in the ideal democratic terms that would be a referendum on Donald Trump in November. If it’s just referendum on Trump, you want a vanilla candidate like Joe Biden so that people can say, 'Yes, I really don’t like some of the behavior and I'm going to vote for the Democrat.' The second thing to say is here the Democratic Party establishment, in response to Trump, has asserted itself in a way that I don’t think we would’ve anticipated a few weeks or maybe even a few days ago. And I think that’s what voters have responded to. So many late deciders, I think they took direction from the Democratic Party elders in terms of the endorsements of some of their rivals. It was telling. And to me, as I said earlier, a big surprise, Minnesota and Massachusetts, liberal bastions that went for Joe Biden tonight."
