Md. Dem Rips Obama Admin’s Handling of Weinstein; We Need a ‘Hostage Czar’

‘We have a lot of czars in government — we should have a hostage czar’

NN ANCHOR: “Congressman, I want to share with our viewers another part of this family statement that reads this, 'Unfortunately, the assistance we received from other elements of the U.S. government was inconsistent and disappointing over the course of 3 1/2 years. We hope that my husband’s death and the others whose have faced similar tragedies in recent months will finally prompt the U.S. government to take its responsibility seriously and establish a coordinated and consistent approach to supporting hostages and their families. So she references the other elements of the U.S. government that are inconsistent and disappointing. What was she referring to? What is she talking about and what they have told you about it?"
DELANEY: “Listen, we worked very closely with her over the last couple of years on this matter. I agree with everything Elaine is saying. In addition to being a wonderful, loving husband [sic] of Warren she is also a wise and astute person. I think she was obviously very on the top of one situation, and in my opinion -- and we have been saying this for a long time -- our efforts as a nation to identify our hostages that are held overseas is way insufficient. We need to be doing a much better job finding these people. It should be our absolute top priority. We saw specific examples where we had to get involved, where the resources of the government weren't coordinated as well as they should be to really bring to bear all of the capabilities and resources and talents and expertise the U.S. Government has. This needs to become a much bigger priority for our country. We cannot let Americans be held overseas and not be finding them. What happened here, there needs to be an investigation about what happened specifically around the events that caused Warren’s death. But the key is we didn’t find him. We didn't find him. We had several years to try to find him and we didn’t find him and we didn't know where he was and we were involved in this tragic accident that resulted in his loss of life. It's -- his country let him down.”
NN ANCHOR: “Would you go so far to say negotiations need to happen to gain back U.S. hostages?”
DELANEY: “I don’t necessarily disagree with our policy around negotiations with terrorists. Obviously I don’t think we should negotiate with terrorists but we have tremendous resources and tremendous capabilities in this country and we need to be putting them to work smarter to find these people. I’m really focusing on why we can’t find these people in an area where we are investing a tremendous amount of money, have tremendous assets and we have lots of partners who really need to be helping us in this effort. That's what I am really focused on. We have a lot of czars in government. We should have a hostage czar. Someone who wakes up every day and has complete access to all resources of the U.S. government to find Americans that are held hostage.”
