Obama Townhall Woman: As ‘Mommy Blogger’ I Make ‘Significantly More’ than Teachers

‘There are teachers that are leaving their professions, good teachers, because they can’t afford to feed their families’

ODOM: “Hi, Mr. President. I’m Erin Odom from North Carolina and thehumbledhomemaker.com. It’s an honor to meet you. My question is — first of all, I believe the key to economic growth and the key to ending the cycle of poverty is education, which I think you would agree. My question is, what can the government do on federal level to increase the wages of our teachers? Which is traditionally and stereo-typically a female profession.

And I’ll tell you, my husband is a public schoolteacher. I’m a blogger. Through our business — we call it our business, because he help me —we make significantly more money on a mommy blog than he makes as a public school teacher. For three years we were on government aid and I’m thankful we had that so we can survive through our [indecipherable] checks, through Medicaid.

But there are teachers that are leaving the profession, good teachers, because they can’t afford to feed their families. And I want children in our country to have a good education. And females — my husband is male — but females that are single women supporting their families on a teachers’ salary, they can’t do it. I know it’s a state thing, but what can the federal government do to put pressure on the states to increase teachers’ income?”
