Ana Marie Cox: We ‘Have To Force People To Do Things They Don’t Want To Do’

‘That’s sometimes what happens’

RUSH TRANSCRIPT:
QUINN: "That baker is in a service industry. I think the balance is, that person has full religious freedom. We can't force their church to do anything. But when their desire to embrace their religion impacts on my rights to access services you've stepped over the line."
KORNACKI: "What do you think?
COX: "I agree with that statement. I think it's important for the context of the discussion of the Indiana law it was passed in response to what happened in new Mexico to try and change the ability of people to not have to do these kinds of things. I want -- I don't think they're recognizable. I think you're going to have to force people to do things they don't want to do. That's sometimes what happens. Al I think it's important to understand. When we talk about the Indiana law, that it had intent behind it. There are people who passed that law intended to be able to use it as a defense for discrimination.
KORNACKI: "It's important --"
COX: "The intent is important. What was intended by the people who passed and supported this law. I think it showed an ugly side of this debate on both sides."
