Fox News: Proposal Buys Homeless One-Way-Ticket Bus Ride Out of Seattle

‘Recent homeless count found that 84% had lived in King county before becoming homeless with one-third growing up in the area’

EXCERPT:

SPRINGER: "Dana, the purpose of the bus ticket is really very simple. To reunite the homeless with family members who could either take them in or support them in ways King County simply can’t. In fact, the name of the program is Homeward Bound. King County, which includes Seattle, has had a major homeless problem for over a decade, with more than 11,000 people homeless and more than 5,200 of them are unsheltered living on the streets. This despite the fact that spending on the problem has skyrocketed. The county has just approved spending $330 million on affordable housing, shelters, and services for the homeless over the next two years. That's on top of Seattle spending nearly $100 million a year. So Councilmember Reagan Dunn has proposed this Homeward Bound pilot project that would give homeless people a one-way bus or train ticket back to where they have loved ones. Other cities have tried it, including San Francisco, and the results have been mixed.”
