Youth Climate Activist: ‘I’d Like to Acknowledge My Privilege’

‘My parents are Chinese immigrants and they sacrificed everything to come to America’

EXCERPT:

GAO: “Okay. Is this better? My name — my name is Wendy Gao, and I’m 17 years old, I am a Native American climate activist. I’d like to acknowledge my privilege and my background because my climate story is vastly different from the ones that you’ve heard today and you will hear later on. Indigenous people and frontline communities are and will continue to be most affected by the climate crisis. Many are fighting for their lives and their rights today and they have been for centuries. So we recognize this and we amplify their voices and their work.”
