Pelosi on Citizenship Question on Census: You Know His Hat, ‘Make America White Again?,’ They Want Certain People Counted

PELOSI: “What you saw on the part of the Administration with the citizenship question is it's — it's disgraceful and disrespect. First of all, they decided to put that on the ballot. Why? They couldn't even respond to the Supreme Court on that. The Supreme Court did not rule in their favor because they said the Administration did not give sufficient evidence as to why the census — citizenship question should be there. So they kicked the can and then the Administration said okay, we won't put it on there, and then the President injected himself into this. But this is about keeping, you know — make America, you know, his hat, make America white again. They want to make sure that people, certain people are counted. It's really disgraceful and it's not what our founders had in mind, and it's not what we can decide who we are as a people. Who are we? What is America? We celebrate America on the Fourth of July. What is America? America is our Constitution, separation of powers, co-equal branches of government, the freedoms, including freedom of the press, the guardian of our democracy, and the Bill of Rights. Who is America? America is our Constitution.”
